Rev.
Weatherly is on vacation for the next two Sundays.
Father Spigner has the helm and will be officiating on
Sundays. Father Spigner is also available for pastoral
emergencies.
The
coffee hours on
Sunday, July 20, after the 8 and 10 services
are hosted by Bruce Magruder in honor of his parents,
Betty and Don Magruder. Bruce was the first person to
sign up for our summer coffee hour schedule and we are
delighted to have him host. The sign up sheet for
coffee hours is in the usual sign up central location!
This is a great was to contribute to the fellowship
ministry. On Sundays without a host we will just have
coffee.
The
vegetable garden
has really taken off! Zucchini the size of Delaware are
emerging every day! We welcome volunteers of all ages
to contribute to the harvesting, delivery to Arlington
Food Assistance Center and watering. If needed, we can
store the veggies in the rectory refrigerator for a
short time until delivery to AFAC is possible. Sign up
to handle a week of garden activity at a time. But
don’t be shy about dropping in to lend a hand.
Saturday, July 19, I’m going to be there at 8 to harvest
and take the items to AFAC but anyone can drop in as
your schedule allows. Even if you haven’t signed up,
hands are needed anytime.
Vestry Meeting Highlights
At the
July 8 vestry meeting, we elected the following people as
officers:
Senior
Warden: Priscilla Carey
Junior
Warden: Jim Williams
Treasurer: John Bartlett
The
position of Register will be announced shortly. Many thanks
to these parishioners who are willing to continue in
leadership roles.
The
following are highlights from the vestry meeting:
1.
The vestry authorized the recruitment for a
Christian Education coordinator position to provide
leadership for Sunday School. This position is NTE $6,000
for a 9 month program year. The vestry is also prepared to
entertain the possibility that two paid teachers will be
needed this year. Volunteer teachers will be actively
recruited first.
2.
The Care Team reported on their work to date
and provided a thorough briefing on an action plan. The
Care Team will complete the final action plan by the time
Beverly returns from vacation on July 28.
3.
The rector will host two music visioning
sessions in August to help define our music needs for both
9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
4.
The Fall Bazaar will be on November 14/15. We
do not have a chairperson for the bazaar and we decided we
should gather together interested participants to help
determine what this year’s bazaar should be. We may need to
use a “steering committee” approach to planning and
executing this event which has long been a key part of our
Fall at St. Andrew’s.
5.
St. Andrew’s Day will be November 23.
Two recognitions - Sunday July 13:
At the
10:00 a.m. service on the 13th, we will recognize
our three college students – Michael Cassidy, Emily Morris,
and Sarah Edwards – and present scholarships to them funded
by the Endowment for Human Needs and Outreach. This is
always a very special occasion.
Also at
the 10:00 a.m. service, we will offer prayers and blessings
for our Mission Team:
Ted
Edwards
Christopher Edwards
Virginia Pearson
Elyse Pearson
Jackie Cartmell
Bobbie Witherell
Miguel Lazo
Stephany Lazo
William Carey
Priscilla Carey
This team
of 10 St. Andrew’s missioners will be heading to Mission on
the Bay camp in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, on Sunday
morning August 3 and will return on August 9. We will be
part of the effort to help the area devastated by Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita.
Donations
for this Mission Trip are always greatly appreciated. It is
our intent to raise the funds necessary to support the
effort and we’re not quite there yet …………
It
is such a blessing to have so many of our young people (Ted,
Virginia and I are pretty young too!) who are willing to
spend a week working on behalf of those in need.
New Coffee Hour Opportunities for the Summer
Look on
the bulletin board this weekend for a new opportunity to
contribute to the fellowship time at St. Andrew’s!
Starting
with coffee hour on July 20, we are asking for volunteers to
host the coffee hours after the 8 am service and after the
10 am service and like our altar flower donations, we will
include the hosts in the bulletin and include the reason for
hosting (in honor of a birthday or anniversary, “just
because”, in thanksgiving for St. Andrew’s, etc.) This
time is so critical to the continued growth of the parish
and we’ve heard from many that they would like the
opportunity to participate. Details will be on the board
and Vestry members will “train” those who sign up. The
basic need is for someone to be responsible for bringing
some treats, juice and half and half. Coffee is provided.
So sign up
early and often!
Bake Cookies Year Round for Our Soldiers at Walter Reed
I have
been searching for opportunities for our St. Andrew’s
community to help support our soldiers who have returned
from war zones. I’ve met a wonderful man through my job at
Peace Lutheran Church who is a retiree and war veteran. He
regularly picks up homemade cookies from Peace Lutheran and
delivers them to Walter Reed so the veterans can have some
treats. Talk about comfort food! He is always in need of
cookies (only homemade cookies – no store bought) and
welcomes contributions from St. Andrew’s. The cookies are
needed year round. So……..here’s how we can help:
Anyone at
St. Andrew’s can make a batch of cookies, bring them to
church in freezer bags labeled “Tom Porter” and place them
in the white freezer in the kitchen. I will take the
cookies to Peace Lutheran when I head to work and our
cookies will be taken by Tom to help bring a smile to a
veteran’s face. Bake when you can, as often as you like,
year round. We’ll support Tom’s ministry because we
certainly know that we at St. Andrew’s can bake!
I have
delivered our first cookies and they have already been
consumed by the grateful Walter Reed residents!
